Crypto investigator ZachXBT criticized hardware wallets on Thursday, calling them unreliable for signing transactions or storing meaningful funds.

In their view, all hardware wallet solutions existing today fall short in security and usability, making them unsuitable for high-risk operations.

He recommends using a dedicated iPhone as a signing device only, removed for wallet purposes only. This approach offers better control and fewer vulnerabilities than traditional hardware wallets, he said, though he added a sharp warning: “Do this only if you are not at your wits end.”

The investigators singled out Ledger as the worst culprit, pointing to frequent Ledger Live updates that unnecessarily overhaul the UI and apps, often breaking basic functions in the process. The post quickly sparked debate on crypto social media, with users sharing their experiences with hardware wallet frustration.
